Holds Types

The shapes or types of the holds are the many ways in which our hands can hold them. To help you to find out which type of holds to choose, and therefor which ones are best matched to your needs, we now describe them to you:

• Holds type jug hold:

  This is type of hold allows you to take it with the whole hand, it is one of the biggest holds, allowing the climber to rest his or her fingers. You can also find it under other names such as: mailbox, bucket..

• Holds type sloper hold:

  these are holds where the fingers and hands basically are held by grip and friction, as their surface has very little relief and small edges. Usually, they are large and rounded in their shape. Without any doubt, the greater the surface of hand and finger contact, the better the grip.

• Holds type pinch hold:

  this type of hold is held with the thumb and the rest of the fingers in opposition, this way we train the compression strengths. The holds can vary in size, so that the grip is made with the thumb and a either two or four fingers hold, or in their surface. The thinner they are, the more muscular strengths are necessary.

• Holds type pocket hold:

  this type of hold is grasped by one, two or three fingers, that´s where their names one-; two- and three-finger-hold come from. They can vary in their depths, allowing the fingers to insert more or less lengths of the finger(s), and in their inclination, leading to different grip complexities.

• Holds type crimp hold:

  this type of holds can only be grasped with the first phalanges of the fingers, that´s why a great muscular strength in the fingers is necessary for a good grip. There are three types of taking the holds:

- ‘Closed’, donde las falanges de los dedos están muy flexionadas con la oposición del pulgar “abrazándolas”. Es el agarre que más fuerza ofrece, pero a largo plazo, de alta incidencia de lesión.

- ‘Arching’, the phalanges insert the crimp highly flexed, and the remaining parts of the fingers are extended and with the thumb in opposition pushing the hold but not “hugging” the fingers.

- ‘Extended grasp’,the phalanges are extended and the thumb in opposition without resting on the hold.

• Lateral holds:

  this type of hold, like the pinches, vary in their thickness and inclination, so that the grip is usually better when the whole body pushes or pulls towards it.

• Inverted holds:

  this type of hold allows the climber to grasp it from bottom to top. The best grip is reached when the body is the closest to the hold, allowing to train the balance and to reach a greater closeness towards another hold.

• Volume type holds:

  hold size moderate, large and very large, which allow a great variety of grip types, with one or two hands, as well as double or cross hands on them. Also, the entire surface allows to be used as a foothold, from heel to toe or as any kind of hook, thus increasing the variety and originality of body movements.

• Children´s climbing holds:

  this kind of holds are designed especially to be easily hold with small hands or to be used with street shoes. Furthermore, there are shaped to encourage play and allow a very enjoyable and funny way learning the sport of climbing. There are packs of children´s climbing holds for usage in urban playgrounds, in schools or small domestic walls or gyms.
